MyJLPT photo requirements for applications in Japan

MyJLPT in Japan: at least 480 pixels wide and 640 pixels high, JPEG only, no more than 5 MB.

480 × 640 is a minimum, not an exact canvas

JEES states that a face photo smaller than 480 × 640 pixels cannot be registered. The two values are minimum width and height. The 2026 instruction does not publish a maximum pixel size and does not say that every upload must be exactly 480 × 640 or exactly 3:4.

File and capture options

The application accepts JPEG photo data up to 5 MB. MyJLPT lets an applicant upload a photo taken in advance or capture one with a web camera during the application. The photo is printed on the test voucher, certificate of Japanese-language proficiency and score certificate, and cannot be changed after the application period ends.

Identity and appearance rules

• Use a photo taken within the last six months.
• Face the camera and keep the face centred and recognisable.
• Nothing from a room or scenery should be visible behind you.
• If you will wear glasses at the exam, wear them in the photo; a hijab is allowed.
• Do not use app-edited, distorted, blurred, dark, red-eye or group photos.
• Hats, sunglasses, masks, earphones, lens glare and hair or frames covering the face or eyes are unacceptable.

Overseas JLPT is different

These file limits are for domestic MyJLPT applications in Japan. Overseas JLPT hosts set their own registration process; some require a different photo and some require no photo. Use the local host’s current instruction instead of assuming the Japanese upload rule applies worldwide.
